Yorkshire Antiques Take Centre Stage at Harrogate Antiques Fair
Art and antiques made in Yorkshire take centre stage at The Pavilions of Harrogate Decorative Antiques & Fine Art Fair from 15 – 17 November 2024. Featuring more than 45 specialist dealers from across the country, this popular event is a magnet for antique collectors and period furnishers across the north of England. ‘Art and antiques made in Yorkshire or by Yorkshire artists and designers are always popular,’ explainer organiser Sue Ede. ‘Not only do we feature dealers from Yorkshire who sell locally made pieces but many of our other exhibitors strive to offer Yorkshire pieces too.’
Among the many pieces on offer will be a superb Regency period bracket clock by John Garth, (right) a clock maker from Harrogate. With an eight-day Fusee movement and painted dial with Roman numerals, the clock is signed by John Garth, who is also known as a watchmaker and a jeweller with retail premises in Harrogate from c.1822- 26. It is priced at £3,250. A successful maker, Garth also owned a shop in Knaresborough High Street from 1822-1844. His brother, Thornton Garth, was also a clockmaker with a shop in Leeds. The clock will be offered for sale by Olde Time, specialist clock dealers returning to exhibit in Harrogate for the first time in many years.
Olde Time will also be showing another Yorkshire piece, George III period grandfather clock by Jonathan Storr of York. The clock has an eight-day movement and has fine Sheraton period inlay decoration. It is priced at £9,000. The Storr family were a famous clockmaking family, mostly Quakers who originated from Ostwick in East Riding before moving to Summercroft, Selby and later to York.
