Collectors Ready for an ‘Oarsome’ Chester Antiques Fair

A superb pair of wooden rowing oars with leather collars and copper tips will be among the many rare and collectable pieces going on sale at The Chester Decorative Antiques & Art Fair at the Grandstand, Chester Racecourse from 18th – 20th October 2024.

Belonging to Midwinter Antiques from Shropshire, the oars date from the 19th century and measure 258cms in length (101inches). As Susannah Midwinter explains, ‘It’s rare to find a wonderful pair of oars in

such good condition with a rich colour and fine patina. They are sure to appeal to anyone in the sailing and boating world who is looking something decorative and interesting for their home, clubhouse or perhaps

luxury yacht!’ The oars will be offered for sale with a price tag of £420.00.

Midwinter Antiques have more exhibits with a nautical appeal including a large 19th century ships wheel.

Impressive in size, it features
brass mounts on both sides and
centre, and the eight spokes are
well turned, with a carved
Cupid’s bow carving between each spoke. This decorative piece could be wall mounted or used as a tabletop with heavy duty glass on top. It is priced at

£695.00.

The popular autumn Chester Decorative, Antiques & Art Fair is the most prestigious event for collectors and vintage decorators in the northwest of England. It brings together specialist dealers from across the UK offering for sale a wide range of high-quality pieces from the past 500 years.

Says Sue Ede, the organiser: ‘The Chester Fair has been running since 1989 and attracts customers from all over the country. Our exhibitors assemble a superb range of pieces which cannot be seen anywhere else. It’s a must for anyone with an interest in the finest art, antiques and decorative pieces.’

Local dealers and galleries from Chester, Shropshire, Lancashire, Manchester and across the region take part in addition to others from around the country. Prices range from less than £50 for unusual glass and silver, to more than £20,000 for the finest traditional and contemporary paintings and sculpture. As usual, dealers will also be specialising in Art Nouveau and Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern, antique furniture, fine silver, 19th and 20th century paintings, jewellery, antique glass, European bronzes, porcelain and many unusual decorative items.

The fair runs daily and includes a restaurant for light lunches and refreshments.
