Paintings by the Yorkshire artist Owen Bowen (1873-1976) will be a major attraction at The Pavilions of Harrogate Decorative Antiques & Fine Art Fair at The Great Yorkshire Showground, from 28th – 30th January 2022.
Belonging to the Harrogate art specialists Walker Galleries from Montpellier Parade, the paintings are typical of his finest work and reveal the influence of his teacher, William Gilbert, a leader of the respected Staithes Group of artists, at the Leeds School of Art. Gilbert inspired Bowen to visit Staithes and the Yorkshire coast and countryside which provided inspiration for many of his finest pictures.
Bowen enjoyed commercial success from a young age at the inaugural Yorkshire Union of Artists exhibition in 1888, where he won two medals in the amateur category. However, following a disagreement with the Secretary two years later he was expelled at the age of seventeen. After several successful years as a commercial artist, Bowen opened his own School of Painting in Leeds. In 1904 he was elected a member of the Staithes Art Club.
Bowen lived a long and productive life and traveled widely, to Holland, Austria, Scotland, and Wales, and exhibited at many of the national societies, including the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (which he was elected a member of in 1916), and the Royal Cambrian Academy, where he served as President between 1947-1954. He died in Leeds on the 17 September 1967, at the experienced age of ninety-four.
Among the paintings by Owen Bowen on sale at the fair will be ‘A Yorkshire Haytime’, in oil on canvas, which featured in an exhibition at the Royal Institute of Painters in 1917. It will be on offer for £3,000. Another, ‘Roses’, is a charming and lively still life full of vibrant colors. It is on sale for £3,200.
This will be the first antiques fair of the year for The Pavilions at the Great Yorkshire Showground. ‘It promises to be a great start to the New Year,’ says fair organizer Sue Ede. ‘We offer a wide range of specialists Bottlebrook Antiques.
With a vast range of high-quality pieces for sale, at prices from £20 to £20,000, the fair has something for everyone. The Pavilions of Harrogate Fair brings together many dealers from the north of England. Jack Shaw and Highland antiques sells fine English and Scottish silver; John Newton Antiques specializes in fine porcelain and studio pottery; Mark Buckley Antiques and Melody Antiques offer English country furniture and Ellis Fine Art has oil paintings and fine furniture.
From Harrogate, Sutcliffe Galleries and show fine paintings, From Ludlow, Rowles Fine Art offer paintings and sculpture; and from Gloucestershire, Brian Ashbee show a range of decorative furnishings and unusual collector’s items. Also showing will be the jewelry specialists Plaza and Shapiro & Co; and porcelain.
