THE COTSWOLDS DECORATIVE, ANTIQUES & ART FAIR
THE COTSWOLDS DECORATIVE, ANTIQUES & ART FAIR Westonbirt School, Westonbirt, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, GL8 6QG
16 – 18 August 2024
Nuts About the Cotswolds Antiques Fair!
A mid-19th century carved corozo nut featuring an intricately carved grotesque face with handblown glass eyes goes on sale at The Cotswolds Decorative, Antiques & Art Fair at Westonbirt School, near Tetbury, Gloucestershire, from 16-18 August 2024.
Described as one of the most unusual pieces on sale at the popular summer fair, the carving belongs to exhibitor Andy Maule Antiques. Says Andy, ‘Corozo is derived from the nut of the Tagua Palm which grows in the equatorial rainforests of central America. Today the nut is used as a sustainable alternative to plastic for jewellery, buttons, knife handles and ornamental things.’ Before the advent of plastic, corozo accounted for 20% of all buttons in America. Now, as fashion looks to clean up its image and reduce plastic pollution, a corozo renaissance is underway. The antique carved nut will be on sale at the fair for £300.
The Cotswolds Decorative, Antiques & Art Fair is a regular August attraction, featuring more than forty specialist dealers from across the country. The fair
showcases everything from the most traditional antique pieces to
the latest chic and decorative furniture, textiles and accessories.
Among the many highlights will be a superb Art Nouveau glazed display cabinet by Shapland and Petter Barnstaple (right). The cabinet would make a stunning addition to any home; finely decorated in the Glasgow style with inlaid mother of pearl and exotic woods. It is priced at £5,750 from James Miles, the Arts & Crafts specialist.
Art Deco collectors will find much to enjoy on the stand of Jeroen Markies from East Sussex, notably fine furniture,
paintings and decorative objects including an impressive pair of walnut and chestnut leather Art Deco ‘bankers chairs’ designed by
Harry & Lou Epstein, priced at £6,800 (right); and a pair of French Art Deco polar bear bookends, circa 1930, priced at £1,150 (left).
Says fair organiser Sue Ede: ‘We are delighted to be back at Westonbirt for our summer fair. This is where people come to decorate and furnish their homes, mixing and matching antique and Mid- Century accessories, fine art, sculpture and furniture with contemporary pieces. There so much to see and enjoy!’
Collecting areas include English furniture from WR Harvey Antiques; Scandinavian jewellery from Dansk Silver; fashionable Blue & White ceramics from David Scriven Antiques; 20th century costume jewellery from specialists Candice Horley and Panache, classic jewellers Plaza and
Shapiro & Co; and Not Wanted on Voyage show unusual designer furniture and decorative 20th century pieces.
Glass of All Ages return with designer 20th century and contemporary glass; so too Rustall Art from the Cotswolds specialise in Modern British and contemporary paintings.
The Cotswolds Decorative, Antiques & Art Fair takes place in the spacious and atmospheric setting of Westonbirt House, now a prestigious school, occupying the Great Hall, Orangery and adjoining period rooms.
